Hamilton Canada’s 66 year old iconic sports celebrity started learning to fight, wrestle and be a striker at the age of 15 under the tutelage of Jack Wentworth. Jack’s Queenston Health Studio was in the east end of Canada’s Steeltown. This 1959 start launched a 50-year career with a 25 year run as a world-class pro-wrestler. JP created his own mix of catch wrestling from Lou Thesz, picked up his ‘boot’ style Taekwondo approach in the late 70s and eventually added Celtic boxing and cane fighting.

In 2006 he was honoured with having developed a unique fight style and given the Japanese title of soke, which means family head or originator.

Soke Powers helped create the “strong tough man style”(tm) in the Japan market from 1967 to 1976. JP with Johnny Valentine, Karl Gotch, Lou Thesz, in the 1972-1976 period along with Antonio Inoki put together this strong style combat.

Johnny Powers had turned over his National Wrestling Federation world title to Inoki December the 10th, 1973 in the famous Tokyo Sumo Hall. Inoki went on to be the King of Mixed Martial Arts with his many fights against numerous combat styles including the controversial Ali fight in 1976. Powers is one of the “fathers” of the current extreme cage fighting phenomena.
